The other morning i was sifting through the usual rubbish splashed out on the pages of The Sun Herald when i came across an article or "commentary" on skinny leg jeans. Obviously being one who wears these such threads i decided to read on and found myself totally enthrawled in the article. The lady who wrote the commentary seemed to be some sort of academic, however she did know what she was talking bout. She began by suggesting that because so many people wore jeans these days that you would think the semiotics (symbolism) of jeans would have lost all meaning by now. However this is not the case as their are numerous types of jeans still being produced with different styles (Skinny, straight, flares, apple bottom)and each style can testify to different groups. I found all this so fascinating and it made me wonder and think of the increasing fashion of leather jackets and will the same thing happen to them. Last week i was walking through Newtown in Sydney whereby 90% of the people i walked past were in leather jackets. Due to so many people wearing leather these days will they lose their semiotic meaning (cool, abstract, dark, ecclectic, indy, mod) also? Will they just become another lame accessory that you see on every Tom, Dick and Harry? Last winter only a small crew seemed to be rocking leather but this winter its the flavour of the month and yer i guess it kind of deters me from wearing leather out and around the town. I say dont be another sheep do your own thing - be abstract, go against the grain. Above is a pic of the mod cult hero/fashionista Bob Dylan, definatly love his style and definatly against the grain.
