The Semiotics of Skinny jeans and leather jackets

The other morning i was sifting through the usual rubbish splashed out on the pages of The Sun Herald when i came across an article or "commentary" on skinny leg jeans. Obviously being one who wears these such threads i decided to read on and found myself totally enthrawled in the article. The lady who wrote the commentary seemed to be some sort of academic, however she did know what she was talking bout. She began by suggesting that because so many people wore jeans these days that you would think the semiotics (symbolism) of jeans would have lost all meaning by now. However this is not the case as their are numerous types of jeans still being produced with different styles (Skinny, straight, flares, apple bottom)and each style can testify to different groups. I found all this so fascinating and it made me wonder and think of the increasing fashion of leather jackets and will the same thing happen to them. Last week i was walking through Newtown in Sydney whereby 90% of the people i walked past were in leather jackets. Due to so many people wearing leather these days will they lose their semiotic meaning (cool, abstract, dark, ecclectic, indy, mod) also? Will they just become another lame accessory that you see on every Tom, Dick and Harry? Last winter only a small crew seemed to be rocking leather but this winter its the flavour of the month and yer i guess it kind of deters me from wearing leather out and around the town. I say dont be another sheep do your own thing - be abstract, go against the grain. Above is a pic of the mod cult hero/fashionista Bob Dylan, definatly love his style and definatly against the grain.

What ive missed.. Shawny Mac strikes some form

Currently and up until now its dawned on me that this winter so far has been pretty dam good. Now that im finally on holidays and can experince these powerful winter swells myself, start chasing it and enjoy the good times that come my way - both surfing and girl related.

The past week: - this past week saw a solid ne ground swell hammer the east coast of Australia which was unfortunately timed with my last week of practical experience at Vincentia Primary School. Above is one shot of Shawny Mac who is on a John Farnhem esque comeback in the ocean and a shot from a pumpmin eddies day of Damian king apparently russ claims he spun into this barrell "filth". It seems as though i did miss out on what looked like some amazing rollers with epic days claimed at: Supers, Nuggs, Trienos, Guilos, Eddies and Acids. Few massive quotes went down:

Matt Young: - "Best waves ive ever had in my life, the lip was like solid 6ft" (Matt Young slightly exagerating a session at his local on the wed mornign).

Mark Howlett: - "I could surf trienos everyday, ive been ulladulla everyday for that past two weeks" (Howie super keen for trienos..)

Jack Dobinson: - "Oh i swear this winter has been the best ever, ive surfed acids friday, saturday and today"

Shawn hits some form: - Good to see shawn mccauley has giving up regulating the chicks and the festivals for the ocean once more. Although as i type this he is coming home from a Canberra where he unfortunatly saw the electro garbage duo only known as the "bloody beetroots" truly sickening stuff. All that aside though hes been putting in some time in the liquid due to his lack of work commitments and turning over some cool shots.

Cold days and Holidays

Holidays: - yes it has finally come around to that time of year, were i and most other uni students have some precious time off to hunt lumps of ocean and throw ourselves into flaring caverns.. with a lovely looking east swell hitting wednesday my mouth is beginning to water already.

The Movie: - Shipped off - woo 50 dvd's have been lined up for us from some blokes in Sydney who make dvds and yer. So i guess we should hurry up and pay them. Being the tight arses we are im not sure when that day is going to come to frewition. Russ has finally only just finished paying off his new rig, Shawn has lost his liscence and me.. well lets just say i dont feel like throwing any cash around just yet.

Soup Natzi's: - Whilst doing my practical experience for uni at my old primary school somehow i managed to get infected with some sort of throat virus/flu like disease. Luckily it was during my last few days and could still manage an enthusiastic "Good Morning Year 3". The following day Shawn, russ and i were sipping cafene bliss at our local haunt and noticed the soup of the day special. Sounded "pure" and due to the cold windy conditions we thought it was ample if not a perfect piece of prime advertising. We endulged in some awesome chicken noodle soup with garlic toast, i definatly advise all those feeling the cold and the swine like symptoms to do the same.

The Movie Poster and Zammit's big w.e

Poster boys.... - yer check it, Here is the finalised copy of the movie poster/dvd cover which we finished up today. We feel this poster epitomises everything surrounding lives of bodyboarders - fashion, waves, and art. Any way write it off all you like this is the final copy. Probably not going to start sending it round anywhere just yet as it is still 6 weeks away but yer just thought i should show everyone.

Zammit: - Reknowned lady killer and good mate Kim Zammit, was in fine form all w.e. I was lucky enough to witness his womanising ways on both friday and saturday nights as we ventured to husky pub and posties. Cant say too much but kim definatly turned a few heads with his fresh new cut and single status.

Anberlin back to oz!!

Definitly one of the best gigs ive been to this year was Anberlin back in march. The fellas are back in oz yet again with another gig at the roundhouse. My theory is they have met some lovely chatswood babes on myspace last time they were here and decided to return. Who cares what the reason they are a sik band with some great neg tunes. Our crew last time was so fun too with reports of ad quinn crowd surfing his way up to the mic and singing the final few words of "Day late friend". Amazing night. Above are a few photos: - ad and shawn way up in the car, Dicko and the crew and Anberlin on stage.

GIGS, GIGS GIGS: - Totally love a good live band.. since last putting print to blog the fellas have seen a few bands and here are some great memories:

Presets - win entertainment full of 17year old babes.

Ratatat - Ivan Pulic sober hitting stawk in the head to try and get him to take photos

Ness Muir - russ quinn pashing back stage.

Return of the Blog

The MOVIE is FINISHED:- Hey to all bruzzas and female associates/babes. Finally we return with the most controversial blog on the south coast. The film "I Wouldnt Normally" will be premiering on the 31st of July 2009, it is a friday night with after party at Husky pub!

Why the lag? - its possibly been three or four months since our last post, and for this we apologise. However now the film/blog/surfing is back on track... here are a few updates.

Adam Quinn - Has been a write off all year, surrounded by primary adolescents whilst trying to finish Diploma of education. He is the Van Wilder of the south coast.

Russ Quinn - With a new gf in tow, russ has been nowhere in sight from many recent pumping sessions.

Shawn McCauley - was last spotted no liscence, moving to sanctuary point and formula 1 racing out the heavily localised wave of "trienos bra".

Morgan Brown - Another kid under the thumb...

Ian Osterloh/Alex Parker Munting... that says it all.
